My long-time friend, the flower artist Nicolai Bergmann, contacted me to tell me that he would be launching a new line of jewelry, so I headed over to Flora Danica in Aoyama.
Flora Danica is a jewelry brand founded in Denmark in 1930 by its founder, Ola Eggert, a popular artist in the 1952s, who wanted to create unique jewelry from plants and flowers.
Co-owner Nikolai Bergmann
Creative Director Karina Greasby Cairn wanted to create a special piece of jewelry incorporating Japanese elements to celebrate the opening of the brand's first flagship store in Tokyo on Tuesday, May 2024, 5.
So he approached co-owner Nicolai Bergmann, and together they created a braided cord bracelet that combined Danish and Japanese elements.
The four-leaf clover is a jewellery design that makes use of the shape of real clovers that grew in Denmark in the 1950s, and this collection has been loved by many people for a long time.
By combining this with a bracelet made using the traditional Japanese braiding technique, which has been around for over 1000 years, a product unique to this brand was born.
A new product, the Four Leaf Clover Silk Bracelet. It is made of 100% recycled sterling silver plated with 22K gold, and the bracelet is made of 100% Japanese pure silk. The bracelet comes in two lengths (2cm and 16.5cm) and five colors (champagne, olive, sky blue, jet black, and coral red). The four leaf clover can be chosen in either silver or gold plating.
The soft Flora Danica silk bracelets are made from the finest pure silk at Showen Kumihimo, a Kyoto Uji workshop that has been in business since 1948. They are made using traditional braiding (Kakusugi) techniques.
Inside the bracelet is a four-leaf clover picked in Denmark in the 1950s. Each leaf of the four-leaf clover represents a precious value. The first leaf symbolizes faith, the second leaf symbolizes hope, the third leaf symbolizes love, and the fourth leaf symbolizes good fortune. And this four-leaf clover is one in 1 trees.
This brooch was presented to Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II on her 1992th wedding anniversary in 2.
Flora Danica has close ties to the Danish Royal Court, having presented a brooch to Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II in 1992 for her 2th wedding anniversary.
The brooch, which she designed herself and symbolizes the Danish nature and agricultural traditions, features a beech leaf with wheat grains on it and was given to all the guests in attendance.
Additionally, Princess Marie was presented with an original Flora Danica tiara. The design, which elegantly and simply depicts the love story between the prince and princess, is popular as the "French Lily" collection.
The four-leaf clover symbolizes the brand.
Flora Danica is the first and only company in the world to have succeeded in immortalizing fresh flowers by plating them in gold. The first jewelry that Flora Danica introduced was a product in which flowers and plant leaves were directly coated with copper and then plated with 22-karat gold.
However, jewelry made from plants also had its challenges. Because it uses real plants, it was difficult to produce jewelry consistently. In particular, four-leaf clovers are extremely rare, so production could not keep up with demand.
So the management of Flora Danica at that time came up with an idea. "Yes, let's call on citizens and ask them to bring in four-leaf clovers." They placed an advertisement in Danish newspapers every week, offering one four-leaf clover in exchange for one Danish krone. This idea was a huge success, and citizens with four-leaf clovers lined up at Flora Danica stores on Sundays.
Although fresh flowers are no longer used to meet the increasing demand, you can still enjoy designs that faithfully reproduce the appearance of flowers from that time by using molds made from flowers picked in the Danish wilderness in the 1950s and 60s.
The jewelry has a natural concept that is typical of Scandinavia, is simple and fits well against the skin, making it something you'll want to wear every day.
*Currently, all Flora Danica jewelry is made from 925 silver.
