Learn about Japan's traditional colors

2025.12.5

Can you read it? The traditional Japanese color "Shibazome" is not pronounced "Murasakizome"

What is the traditional Japanese color "Shibazome"?

Purple dye is a pale brown with a slight reddish tinge, made by adding lye to a decoction made by boiling chestnuts, chestnuts, and other miscellaneous woods, including oak and other oak trees. This Shiba dye is recorded in the Kojiki, and is said to have been known since the Nara period. In addition, the clothing regulations in the Heian period collection of laws, the Ryō Gige, stipulate that purple is a low-ranking color in the hierarchy of clothing colors according to social status.

Shibazome = Fushizome

The miscellaneous trees used for the dye grow widely in the mountains and fields, and because they were easily available to anyone, it was ranked lower as a color for official ranks and was mainly used for the clothing of common people.
