"Kuchida" is one of the rare surnames that has its roots in Kuchida, Usaka Village, Fushiki District, Toyama City, Toyama Prefecture.



Currently, they are concentrated in Toyama City, Uozu City, and Kamiichi Town. They are said to be descended from the Seiwa Genji clan, and in the Middle Ages they had their base in Omura Castle and also had influence around Higashiiwase and Mizuhashi. It is believed that they became vassals of the Jinbo clan during the Tenbun era.



The family name is said to have originated from the place name, and is also said to be named after a local samurai known locally as "Kuchida Saemonnojo."



"Kusu" means a bridle, a type of horse equipment, and "ta" means land, so the family name is known to be related to farming and horse culture.

"Kuchida" is a family name that is pronounced "Kutsuwa." There are approximately 1500 such people in Japan. It is found mainly in Toyama Prefecture, but also in Niigata Prefecture and Hokkaido, and some people pronounce it "Kutsuwata."
