"Harigae" is a surname found in many areas of Sarushima Town and Iwai City in southern Ibaraki Prefecture, and is known as a popular surname in the southern part of Ibaraki Prefecture. Approximately 30% of all Harigae people in the country are concentrated in these two municipalities, and it is the second most common surname in Sarushima Town.



It is said that the roots of this word lie in "harigaya," which means "a newly cultivated area," and it is thought that this changed over time to become the character for "harikae."



Furthermore, in the border area between Ibaraki and Saitama prefectures, there are many variations in pronunciation, such as "Harigaya," "Hariya," "Hariya," "Harigai," and "Harigai," which are homophones with different characters. In Tokyo, the most common reading of "Hariya" is "Hariya."



Even more interestingly, there is a legend that the family is connected to the Kanmu Heishi clan, descendants of Emperor Kanmu who settled in Sarushima County, Shimousa Province in ancient times, and in particular to a branch of the Chichibu clan, the Harutani clan. This suggests that the family name carries a dignity that goes beyond mere geographical origins and includes a prestigious historical background.
