What is the traditional Japanese color "Red Wisteria"?
Benifuji, with its striking reddish wisteria color, comes from a plant of the Oleaceae family that blooms with lilac-like purple flowers. It was named after the fragrant purple flowers that bloom in cone shapes at the ends of the branches, especially around May. This color is created by dyeing fabric with an indigo base and then overdyeing it with safflower or sappan, and it is also known as "beni kakefuji" (red hanging wisteria). During the Heian period, wisteria flowers were beloved by aristocrats and are famous for appearing frequently in waka poetry. It is said that the character "fuji" in the name of the Fujiwara clan also comes from this flower.
Red wisteria = Benifuji
In terms of Japanese clothing, wisteria is considered to be suitable for older women, while red wisteria is considered to be suitable for younger people, and is also known as "young wisteria." "Red wisteria" is pronounced "beni fuji."
