What is the traditional Japanese color "pine needle color"?
Matsuba-iro is a dull, deep yellow-green color that is reminiscent of pine needles. This traditional color is also called "pine leaf color," and since pine is a symbol of evergreen trees and has long been considered an auspicious color as an unchanging symbol. In "The Pillow Book" from the mid-Heian period, "matsunoiro" appears as the color of kariginu (hunting clothes), and it has been a representative green color name since that period. In "Tekagami Moyo Setsuyo" from the late Edo period, it is written that matsuba-iro "was popular during the Kansei era," suggesting that it has continued to be loved throughout the ages.
