"Kera" is a very rare surname found in Niigata Prefecture. In particular, the old Kera family is said to remain in the Makigahana area of the former Bunsuicho in Tsubame City.
The origins of the Kairyo family date back to the Sengoku period.
Shinpachi Kaira, who served Yamagishi Uemon, a vassal of Uesugi Kenshin, returned to farming when the Uesugi clan was transferred to Aizu, and developed Makigahana Village. He later governed the village as a village headman, which is said to be the beginning of the village.
It is still commonly seen in Niigata Prefecture, but is rarely seen nationwide. It is known as one of the surnames unique to Niigata Prefecture.
