What is the traditional Japanese color "Benika"?
This refers to a reddish birch color, and is a type of soft brown. Birch itself is a calm color similar to the ears of cattails, while Benikaba is characterized by a warm tone with a slight reddish tint. Around the middle of the Edo period, it was loved as a ground color for kosode, and was known by the beautiful name "Shu Sakura." There is also a color called "Beni Kabacha" (Beni Kabacha tea) which has a stronger brownish color tone.
Red birch = Benikaba
One of the origins of the name is the cattail, which has a unique spike shape and grows in damp places, so it is said to be a sign of floods and water damage, and in ancient China it was also used as a disaster prevention plant.
