What is the traditional Japanese color "Edo Purple"?
"Edo Murasaki" is a bluish purple dyed in Edo. It was popular among the common people of Edo, and an "Edo Murasaki headband" appears in the kabuki play "Sukeroku Night Cherry Blossoms." Edo Murasaki, which is also the title of the play, is known as the color of the headband worn by Sukeroku, and this color came to symbolize the sophistication of Edo. Edo Murasaki differs from the traditional Kyoto-dyed purple dyed with purple roots, and records show that it was dyed using sappan, which was common at the time.
Edo purple = Edomurasaki
In contrast to the reddish rust-colored Kyoto purple known as ancient purple, Edo purple had a bright bluish-purple hue and was also called Imamurasaki. "Edo purple" is pronounced Edomurasaki.
