"Yuri" is a rare surname found in Komatsu City and Shiramine Village in Ishikawa Prefecture. The character "Yuri" means water gate, and it is said that this surname was used by people who were responsible for drawing water to rice fields.



One theory is that it comes from the sound of flowing water, and the sound "dondo" is said to represent the sound of flowing water.



In standard kanji dictionaries, the reading "dondo" for "閖" does not appear, so it may be a reading limited to certain fields of expertise or regions.



This surname is rarely seen outside of Ishikawa Prefecture, and is one of the rarest and most difficult to read surnames.
