What is the traditional Japanese color "Masuka-iro"?
During the An'ei and Tenmei eras of the Edo period, Masuhana-iro was created by adding a more subdued tone to the then-popular light blue. It is a pale blue with a grayish tint. It was invented by Ichikawa Danjuro V, a popular kabuki actor in Edo, and became popular among connoisseurs when it was used in the Ichikawa family's family art. The color name "Masuhana" is a combination of "flower color (indigo)", which is lighter than indigo and darker than light blue, and "Mitsumasu", the Ichikawa family crest, and means "Ichikawa family flower color".
