Learn about Japan's traditional colors

2024.6.22

Can you read it? The traditional Japanese color "sky blue" is not pronounced "kuu-iro" or "kara-iro."

What is the traditional Japanese color "sky blue"?

Sky blue is a bright blue color that reminds us of a clear blue sky during the day. It can be written as "sky" and pronounced "sora", or it can be written as "shinkuu-iro", "kuu-ten-iro" or "heiten". It is an old color name, but it became widely used during the Meiji and Taisho periods. It seems that a deep blue color such as cobalt blue was also sometimes called sky blue. The same kanji is pronounced "amairo" and the color becomes different, a vibrant color with a slightly stronger blue tinge.

Sky blue = Sorairo

It is used in the same sense as the English "sky blue." "Sorairo" is pronounced "sorairo."
