How do you enjoy yoga?
Summer items that connect thoughts
Babaguri has items that will brighten up your lifestyle and are infused with handicraft techniques and wisdom from around the world. This is where the thoughts of Jurgen, who lived his life appreciating the seasons of Japan, can be found.
“My friend glanced at a photo I had taken of the Babagouli store and asked, ``Is that a photo of Yogan's room?'' He is a very close friend of mine, so he knows my room well, so I said, ``No, no. 'This is a photo of the store.' But in my heart, I felt that if it looked like that, then the creation of this store was a success.'' , Beautiful Things, Usable Things” 2009 PHP Institute)

Since launching the brand in 2006, Babagouri has only carried items that Jurgen Lehr himself truly wanted to incorporate into his daily life. ``Because they had another base on Ishigaki Island in Okinawa Prefecture, they seemed to have a lot of different ideas for summer living items,'' says Teruko Takeyasu, a press officer for the company.

Jurgen, who lived on Ishigaki Island in Okinawa, was working on an activity called ``The End of Civilization'' in order to do something about the increasing amount of garbage. He collects huge amounts of washed up plastic and creates lighting. The short film "On the Beach" was screened in 2015 at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo's special exhibition "Whose Place Is This?". There are recordings of her, who was a yoga teacher during her lifetime, quietly talking about how her life on the island led her to develop a reverence for nature and the need to live humbly and not compete with nature. A valuable film.
He also established the Jurgen Lehr Farm on Ishigaki Island, where he moved to. Occasionally, agricultural products grown without pesticides arrive at Babaguri Kiyosumi Main Store. This day is island banana.
Wisdom to make life more comfortable
What I learned from living in Okinawa
For example, in Okinawa, where humidity is high throughout the year, clothes stored in plastic storage cases can quickly become moldy. ``What I loved there was a basket woven from plants native to various parts of Asia.'' Basket products of various sizes and uses made from aquatic plants such as furuna, reed, and elephant grass, leaves of sun-dried vetiver grass, and bamboo are still popular items at Babagouri. In addition, sleeping mats woven from natural materials are said to be ``placed on top of the sheets, allowing air to pass between the body and the body, making it less uncomfortable to sleep.'' This is also a technique that Yogan used in his life in Okinawa. ” he told me.
Items made from natural materials that will be useful in the upcoming season include hats made of linen braid and paper braid, which are highly absorbent and quick-drying, and won't get stuffy even when you sweat. It takes skilled craftsmanship to sew the thin string-like hemp or washi paper in a spiral pattern using a sewing machine. The handmade design, such as the pointy top of the head, is adorable, and the soft finish allows for arrangements such as folding back the brim.
A paper blade hat made from thin strings of washi paper delicately sewn using a handmade sewing machine. When you put it on, it feels soft and light, and it feels nice on your head. 24,840 yen (tax included)
Summer hats are a staple item at Babagouri. It is made from materials that don't get stuffy even when you sweat, and is made with the wisdom to stay refreshed. Hats start from 22,680 yen (tax included).
We have bags made from raffia from Madagascar, palm baskets from Morocco, bags woven from aquatic plants from Burkina Faso, and other bags dyed with tea or coffee that will make your summer look more fun. From 6,264 yen (tax included)
Iron mosquito repellent is also an interesting item to use in the summer. ``Originally, I wanted a durable and beautiful tape cutter to use in my office, so I had a craftsman from Nambu Tekki make one for me at the workshop.''When I commercialized it, it was well-received, and I started using it to store mosquito coils. We also created a heavy-duty mosquito repellent,” says Takeshi. Later, in response to requests for a light and portable type, a series of black iron products was created, made from thin iron plates made in Madagascar and recycled iron drums with a burnt surface. The smoke that rises from the hole in the lid is also beautiful. Since it's portable, it's perfect for enjoying an open-mouthed drink on a balcony on a summer night.
Nambu Tekki's tape cutter and mosquito repellent are the embodiment of Yogan's thoughts. Functional, long-lasting, and beautiful. Tape cutter 19,440 yen Mosquito repellent 17,280 yen (both tax included)
A black iron mosquito repellent that is lighter than it looks and easy to use. The way the smoke from mosquito coils rises is also very atmospheric. Black Iron Mosquito Spray 8,100 yen (tax included)
Jurgen Lehr passed away suddenly in an unexpected accident in 2014, but he said, ``As usual, I went out and said, ``I'm coming,'' so even now I feel like I'm still coming back unexpectedly. That's why I create new designs.'' "Designers and planners always seem to think that they are being watched by Yogan," Takeshi tells me with a smile. For example, Jurgen Lehr created a series of tableware based on the shapes of natural objects such as nuts. In addition to the standard white glaze and grey-blue, this year a series of lapis lazuli porcelains has been introduced. I wonder what he would have thought of the cool blue tableware that reminded us of the sea of Okinawa. What kind of dishes and ingredients would you pair it with on your summer table? It's fun to pick it up while imagining things like that.
Tableware that takes advantage of Jurgen's perspective. This is a series that depicts natural shapes such as tree nuts. Unlike regular tableware that is uniformly sized, it feels gentle and round when you hold it in your hand. In addition to the standard white matte glaze, ash glaze matte glaze, and candy glaze, this year we have added a deep blue lapis lazuli glaze series. Small plate 1,620 yen (tax included) ~
These towels are hand-woven from Indian cotton that is carefully hand-spun into thread. Hand-spun yarn has a soft surface that is gentle on the skin. Hand towels from 2,700 yen, face towels from 4,320 yen, bath towels from 9,288 yen (all tax included)
Rather than fighting against nature, we should accept its harshness and think about how we can comfortably enjoy it. We look to traditional techniques and wisdom for hints. I felt like I was able to find hints throughout the store that could turn the arrival of summer into a little bit of joy, even though just thinking about it can be depressing.
