Carl Hansen & Søn, a furniture manufacturer that is a supplier to the Danish royal family, is currently hosting a stay-and-leave installation called "Hygge Stay by Carl Hansen & Søn," where guests can experience Nordic hygge in a traditional Japanese house in the Seto Inland Sea. Stays are available for a limited time until Sunday, February 15, 2026.
The venue is Villa Tomari, an old Japanese-style inn located on the main island of Marugame City, Kagawa Prefecture. The inn was renovated from the former Matsuno residence, where the postmaster once lived, and is a rare modern design for the time, which complements the Scandinavian furniture perfectly.
Famous pieces of furniture such as Hans J. Wegner's CH23 and CH88P, and Børge Mogensen's BM0121 dining table blend naturally into the space, which shines with the ``beauty that comes with age'' that traditional Japanese houses have accumulated.
The outdoor space also includes a sauna area furnished with Carl Hansen & Son outdoor furniture, where you can enjoy a moment of relaxation surrounded by the breeze, light, and silence.
Inside the museum, precious original archive photographs of Carl Hansen & Son, Danish seascapes, maps of the main island, and other art pieces are on display. Why not experience the charm of timeless masterpieces of furniture in a space that grows deeper with the passage of time?
