This year marks the 7th anniversary of the first gas lamps being turned on in the Ginza Brick Street on December 1874, 12, and the Gas Museum is holding a special exhibition entitled "Ginza Chronicles: From Gas Lamps of the Meiji Era to the Light of Today." The exhibition will run until December 18 (Wednesday).

This exhibition will compare the scenery of Ginza in the Meiji period with that of today. You can see the area from Kyobashi to Shinbashi, including the area around Ginza 4-chome, where many people still come and go, and Ginza 8-chome to Shinbashi, where the river flowed during the Meiji period and only the bridge is visible.

(Bottom) Present-day view of Ginza 8-chome to Shimbashi
Ginza has overcome the damage caused by the Great Kanto Earthquake and war, and is now one of Japan's most famous downtown areas, visited by people from all over the world. This exhibition, where you can experience the charm of the Ginza district and the evolution of Tokyo, will make you feel like you've taken a little time trip. After viewing the exhibition, the familiar Ginza may look different to you than usual.
