At the Kyoto National Museum, a special exhibition commemorating the Osaka-Kansai Expo, "Japan, a Melting Pot of Beauty - A History of Intercultural Exchange" is being held until Sunday, June 6th. This exhibition is limited to Kyoto and will not be traveling.

The exhibition features 19 items, including 53 national treasures and 200 important cultural properties. Items that tell the story of cross-cultural contact include the "Artifacts excavated from the No. 3 wooden coffin tomb at the Yoshitake Takagi Ruins," which includes a bronze mirror and weapons made on the Korean peninsula, lacquerware and ukiyo-e highly praised in Europe, and Toyotomi Hideyoshi's battle surcoat, which uses interior decorations made in a Persian court workshop.

Highlights of the exhibition include well-known iconic works of Japanese art such as Hokusai Katsushika's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji and Sotatsu Tawaraya's Wind and Thunder Gods Screen, as well as the original copy of Histoire de l'Art du Japon, which showcased the Japanese art that the Meiji government wanted to show to the world. Also not to be missed is the first public display of a picture scroll created collaboratively by a Japanese painter and a member of the Korean envoys.
