The TT installation "TT Amami Oshima Mud Dyed Collection exclusive for WAKO", which focuses on the traditional mud dyeing technique that has been around for 1300 years, is being held at Arts and Culture in the basement of the Wako main store in Ginza until Wednesday, October 10th.
Arts and Culture was established in July 2024 as a space to showcase the works of Japanese craftsmen and contemporary artists while inheriting the spirit of respecting traditional culture that flows through Wako. In addition to introducing new brands that resonate with the traditional Japanese aesthetic sense, culture, and technology that Wako has cherished, and convey the essence of unprecedented richness, it also develops a variety of programs to stimulate inspiration as a place for culture and people to interact.
This time, a special installation will be held where visitors can experience the world view of TT, a brand that aims to create timeless clothing that will last 100 years into the future, as well as the culture of mud dyeing, a natural dyeing method that is only practiced on Amami Oshima in the world.
Mud dyeing is characterized by its beautiful colors and unique luster, which are achieved by combining the iron contained in mud fields that are the result of exposure of ancient layers from 150 million years ago with the tannic acid of the techi tree, a tree that is only found on Amami Oshima.
At the venue, the brand's archive items will be on sale, including TT's Wako limited edition shirts, jackets, and bottoms, all with a deep and tasteful "mud dyeing" technique. In addition, valuable vintage pieces will also be on display.
TT, which pursues manufacturing using traditional Japanese techniques and through repeated dialogue with the craftsmen who inherit those techniques, and Japan's proud mud-dyeing culture. The items born from the fusion of the two are sure to go beyond clothing and become timeless pieces that can be loved.
