The Hara Museum of Contemporary Art ARC in Shibukawa, Gunma Prefecture will be holding two types of fan-making workshops in July, using the techniques of "batik dyeing" and "folding dyeing."
The workshop to make a fan using "batik" dyeing was held for the first time last year and was well received, so it is being held for the second time in response to many requests. This year, the instructor will be dyeing artist Natsuki Otake (from Tomioka City, Gunma Prefecture), and the program will involve about two hours of in-depth work using special tools. Otake has presented many works as large-scale installations, in which silk fabric dyed using the traditional "batik" dyeing method is pasted onto walls using a unique method.
The workshop to make a fan using "orizome" involves soaking the folded washi paper in dye and enjoying the overlapping of various colors to create a one-of-a-kind original fan. It is a casual experience that can be experienced in about 40 minutes, and is a popular program familiar to the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art ARC.
Why not try enjoying the coolness of this summer with your own original "My Fan"?
