“The Legend of Sesshu: The Birth of a Charismatic Painter” is being held at the Kyoto National Museum until Sunday, May 2024, 5. This exhibition confirms the origin of the ``Painting Saint'' through the representative works of Sesshu, who is considered one of the most important painters in the history of Japanese art, and examines how the reputation of Sesshu was formed.

Furthermore, Tohaku Hasegawa, who claimed to be Sesshu's successor during the Momoyama period, Togan Kumokoku, who was active as the successor of Sesshu's school in both name and reality, and the Kano school of the Edo period, which played the most important role in the movement to deify Sesshu in the early modern period. In addition, works by various painters are on display, including Edo period painters who looked up to Sesshu as a model. Through the diverse reception of Sesshu, we will clarify the process of birth of Sesshu, the ``pastor of art''.
